Carrie Underwood Had a Smash Hit with “Before He Cheats”
Written by Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins, Carrie Underwood released “Before He Cheats” as the fourth single from her 2005 debut album Some Hearts. It topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and stayed there for five consecutive weeks giving Underwood her second No. 1 country single.
More than that, “Before He Cheats” brought her massive crossover success. The track landed in the top five of the Adult Top 40 chart, the top 10 on the Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts. It also peaked at No. 8 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 survey.

“Before He Cheats” also brought Underwood several awards. It won Single of the Year at the 2007 CMA Awards. It also won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards.
About the song, Josh Kear said, “It’s like a movie. You’ve got just enough sex and just enough violence to appeal to both sexes. The fact that they just left it as a straightforward country record and it worked was a surprise, and pleasantly so.”
Beyond Underwood’s famed catalog, the country star is returning to her roots as the season four winner of American Idol will be replacing Katy Perry on the judge panel.
