Califone aren’t your average Americana outfit. Using fairly unconventional recording techniques and sparse production, the Chicago quartet have created their own crazed style, a beast that is perpetually growing, incomparable to much else. Needless to say, their lo-fi, weirded-out, experimental take on folk music has earned them a niche following in addition to a decent amount of critical acclaim.

Frontman Tim Rutili and the rest of the Califone boys are readying up another disc, the follow-up to 2006’s dentist friendly Roots & Crowns, called All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. The band will release their first effort under their new label, Dead Oceans (Bowerbirds, Dirty Projectors) on October 6. This comes after nearly a decade of releasing records through Thrill Jockey or their own Perishable imprint.

The album is said to be a companion piece for Rutili’s first foray into film, a movie that shares the album’s gloomy title. Rutili and the rest of the guys will definitely have their hands full when they embark on a tour for the album, in addition to entering the film into festivals in 2010.
