The 39-year-old frontman of the rock group was arrested on Thursday (January 5). He faces two charges of criminal possession of a loaded firearm and two charges of criminal possession of a weapon, said the New York City Police Department on Friday.
Law enforcement said that police received a 911 call on Thursday morning around 10 a.m. ET for a person in possession of a weapon inside the city’s Bowery Hotel. That’s when police found two loaded firearms. Executing a search warrant, police found the guns and arrested the musician.
The celebrity news outlet TMZ shared a video of Shultz being put in a police car with handcuffs. The outlet reported that the initial call about a weapons scare came from a hotel employee.
According to the outlet, Shultz was seen in the bathroom with a handgun by a hotel worker. The worker then reported Shultz to his superior, which lead to a call to the police. TMZ was also told that police responded to Shultz’s room and knocked on the door …. Shultz answered the knock and stepped out into the hallway. He was arrested, a search warrant was obtained and the loaded guns were recovered.
In 2019, Cage the Elephant released its latest (and fifth) album, Social Cues, which earned the band a Best Rock Album Grammy in 2020. The group formed in 2006 and also won a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2017 for their LP, Tell Me I’m Pretty.
This is a developing story.
