Boygenius Are Delightfully Weird in New Short Film

Boygenius – the supergroup consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus – play in a league all their own. Each is a formidable force in the indie scene in their own right, so when they come together, there is no matching their energy.

The group shared their debut studio album, The Record, on Friday (March 31). Each of the members’ unique sonic flare is represented on the 12-track album. In celebration of the new record, the group has also released a short film, directed by actress Kristen Stewart.

Sticking to the simple naming system they used for the album, they’ve dubbed the extended music video, The Film. The three-part project is a delightfully weird, visual mind trip that pairs perfectly with the trio’s music.

Ahead of the release of The Record, the group shared three songs: “$20,” “Emily I’m Sorry” and “True Blue.” Each track allowed one member to take the reins and play frontwoman for a moment. The accompanying visual is no different.

The visual opens with Dacus lulling the listener with the album’s opener, “Without You Without Them,” before getting abruptly halted by the far more raucous “$20.” Baker is the star of the show in the first section. She suddenly awakes and, for some reason, is wearing a reflective traffic vest in a race car bed. The viewer is just as disoriented as Baker is while the driving anthem plays overtop all the action.

The second section sees Bridgers pull focus amid a monster truck rally. In contrast to Baker’s lively section, Bridgers stands stoic, mouthing the lyrics to “Emily I’m Sorry,” while the trucks put on a show around her.

The third, and final, section focuses on Dacus’ “True Blue.” Playing into the title, the trio paints a house the titular color before making out with one another. Check out the eccentric visual below.

Boygenius will head out on a headlining tour this summer. The tickets will go on sale today at noon local time. The trio will be supported on their trek by Carly Rae Jepsen, Broken Social Scene, Bartees Strange, Claud and Illuminati Hotties.

The shows will kick off on April 12 in Pomona, California – a few days before their appearance at this year’s Coachella. Elsewhere on the tour are stops in Phoenix, Toronto, Vancouver B.C., Boise and more. Find tickets, HERE.
