Bodies of Water haven’t outgrown the Mamas & the Papas vocal gymnastics on their sophomore album, but this time around their California dreams have given way to nightmares. Like Sufjan Stevens, who leans on similarly choral indie-pop arrangements, Bodies of Water sing with obvious reverence for the Lord, but where Stevens marvels at the majesty of his creations, they bow to his power, arms outstretched, their careening voices begging for mercy in the face of some unspecified natural disaster.Label: SECRETLY CANADIAN

Bodies of Water haven’t outgrown the Mamas & the Papas vocal gymnastics on their sophomore album, but this time around their California dreams have given way to nightmares. Like Sufjan Stevens, who leans on similarly choral indie-pop arrangements, Bodies of Water sing with obvious reverence for the Lord, but where Stevens marvels at the majesty of his creations, they bow to his power, arms outstretched, their careening voices begging for mercy in the face of some unspecified natural disaster. The dramatics pack the most punch when paired with simple, rollicking rock and roll riffs, but mostly the whole affair is too over the top to elicit the goose bumps these songs so desperately aim for.
