It’s hard to know what to expect from a double-disc debut entitled A Love Extreme. Especially considering the artist looks like the spawn of Billy Gibbons. Thankfully, Charlotte, NC-native Benji Hughes’ kaleidoscopic introduction is a success. You can expect the scribe of “Let’s Duet,” from last years Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, to write some entertaining songs, and he certainly does. “The Mummy” and “I Went With Some Friends to See the Flaming Lips” are two of the funnier, catchier songs heard in quite some time. Meanwhile “Tight Tee Shirt” and “Even If,” could leave Justin Timberlake questioning his position as the new King of Pop. However, there are also some tiring and sappy moments. Not enough for Hughes to be anything but proud of this one.
