Ex-Journey singer Steve Perry has arguably stayed out of the spotlight the longest. The golden-voiced arena rocker disappeared in the late ’90s and never returned, despite the massive resurgence in popularity of the band’s signature hit, “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

So what brought him out of retirement? Apparently, it was his love of veteran alt-rock band Eels. Perry shockingly took the stage during this Sunday’s Eels performance in St. Paul, Minnesota to help sing their song “”It’s a Motherfucker” from the 2000 album Daisies Of The Galaxy.

“I’ve told [band frontman Mark Everett] over and over again, ‘I love that song,” Perry told the crowd. “When I first met him, I couldn’t believe it. [I said], ‘Someday, I want to sing that song.’”

Afterwards, they performed the Journey classics “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin.” Watch the surreal set go down below.
