Right now is the greatest time of the year to be a sports fan. The World Series is in full swing, the NBA just started its season, the WNBA just crowned a champion and the NFL is in mid-season form. What does that mean? Well, the national anthem is being sung several times a day to open each of these sporting events.

And while so many of those offerings are delightful, occasionally we hear horrible renditions. Here below, we wanted to examine three such examples. A trio of performances of the national anthem that will make you want to cover your ears and run for cover. Indeed, these are three of the worst national anthem performances in sports history.

Roseanne Barr (1990)

The comedian known for her self-titled sitcom in the 1990s took the microphone in a game in San Diego and didn't exactly persuade anyone to think she could have a second career as a lead vocalist. Shrill and off-key, if you didn't know any better, you might think this was a bit or a joke. Sadly, it wasn't. Why she even took the gig in the first place is unclear. And at the end of it all, she spit on the ground almost as if to give a "fudge you" to the booing crowd. Not exactly the most respectful or respectable act. But hey, there's no accounting for taste!

Carl Lewis (1993)

While track star Carl Lewis was trying on his performance (unlike Rosanne above), he nevertheless didn't do much better ahead of a game in 1993 between the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets. Did his voice fail him at the worst moment? Did he think that since he was such a star at the Olympics he could do whatever he set his mind to? Either way, this was a fail and has haunted an otherwise pristine performance career for the track star.

Ingrid Andress (2024)

At least Rosanne and Lewis aren't professional singers—they can always hang their hat on that. In the 1990s the former was still funny and the latter was still incredible on the track. But in 2024, singer Ingrid Andress betrayed her fans by performing the national anthem at this year's MLB Home Run Derby as if she'd never sung a note before. She was ridiculed online and shortly after claimed she had a drinking problem, which is what led to the issues. Either way, she was bad.

When you go to a sporting event, you're looking for a great game. Some amazing competition. Two teams that are evenly matched and then at the end your favorite one emerges victorious. You don't often attend a game for the national anthem. But when it comes to the chosen few, the opening song ends up being better than the game itself.

Here below, we wanted to explore three such examples. A trio of national anthem performances that give chills as much as they inspire. Three offerings that will get the hair on the back of your neck standing up and make you want to put your hand over your heart and feel as patriotic as you ever have. Indeed, these are three incredible national anthem performances.

Whitney Houston (1991)

When you're nicknamed "The Voice," you know you have something good going on. And Whitney Houston earned her moniker yet again in 1991 when performing the national anthem in front of 750 million fans worldwide ahead of the Super Bowl. Her rich, full voice had every note, every word, every syllable singing and soaring. Backed by the Florida Orchestra, she made the nearly 74,000 fans in the stadium applaud and the three-quarters of a billion watching around the globe shiver with joy.

Marvin Gaye (1983)

Count on Motown star Marvin Gaye to do something different. In 1983 ahead of the NBA All-Star game, the "What's Going On" singer performed the National Anthem with his pitch-perfect, honey-dew voice. But he did so over a unique, nontraditional beat. It wasn't the normal sweeping and soaring rendition. It was crisp, almost staccato. The offering of a master at his craft. Few could pull off something like this with as much style and grace, but Gaye did it and it will be remembered forever.

Chris Stapleton (2023)

When it comes to country music, Chris Stapleton has the Platonic ideal of a singing voice. Raspy, twangy, and rich, Stapleton could sing the phone book and it would be compelling. But when he used it to perform the national anthem, it was chef's kiss. Stapleton could be the permanent singer of the song ahead of every big game and no one would be upset. He's simply that good. Add a little electric guitar to it and it's gold all around.

There's a long history of music and basketball intermixing. There's the age old saying that all NBA players want to be musicians and all musicians want to be some form of athlete. But in the case of a few select examples, those two worlds really do cross over.

Here below, we wanted to explore three songs from professional hoopers that are actually very good. A trio of tracks from NBA players that stand up to chart-topping artists. Indeed, these are three great songs from current NBA stars for all the hoops heads out there.

"Judgement Day" by Dame D.O.L.L.A. from Don D.O.L.L.A. (2023)

This song from perennial NBA All-Star Damian Lillard is a window into someone's soul. On it, Lillard, the current star for the Milwaukee Bucks who rose to fame with the Portland Trailblazers and who goes by Dame D.O.L.L.A., talks about his innermost thoughts. Released in 2023, Lillard raps expertly and if you didn't know he was an NBA star you would just consider him one of the established lyricists in the rap game. On the track, he offers,

Thankful for the struggles, got that armor real
Know it wasn't only me that made me hard to kill
Relationships change and got a awkward feel
But your strength came at my weakness with that cloth reveal
Them late nights, I was lonely and full of pain
They say it's pourin' when it rains, I'm feelin' strange
How I'm droppin' sixty but still don't feel like I'm Dame?
The devil in my lane, he want the leader of the game
Dropped down on my knees, put humility in my posture
A bible and the vibеs, stability in my locker
Niggas playin' loyal, but really your weakеst partners

"Just Do It" by Jaylen Brown and FERG (Single, 2024)

This standalone single featuring Boston Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown marks his debut as a songwriter and musical performer. It was a surprise drop ahead of the 2024 NBA season when Brown released this single, which is a heart-on-his-sleeve offering and a tweak of Nike and Team USA, which didn't include Brown, the reigning NBA Finals MVP, on its summer roster. The song is about Brown being more than a basketball player—he's a whole person. On it he sings,

Open your mind, let the words flow (let the words flow)
Baby you was mine, I'd let the world know (I'd let the world know)
She rocking my jersey, all up in the stands
I learn how to touch her without using my hands
Problems too deep for any therapist
If we could run it back, would you cherish it?
Uh, like I cherish you (like I cherish you)
But now, you get replaced like a pair of shoes

"Get Off" by Lonzo Ball from Born 2 Ball (2018)

Another NBA baller who would be a standout rapper even without his hoops fame. Lonzo Ball, the Chicago Bulls guard, knows how to flow on a beat. He has several tracks on YouTube that boast millions of streams. And this song, which is just meant to hype you up, is one of those. And on this song from his 2018 LP Born 2 Ball, he raps,

I said I had to get off, so what you think I'm doing?
Blue faces, buying gold, always been a Bruin
Except for when they losing, then I gotta keep it moving
People asking what I'm doing, money convos keep it fluent
Claiming you hard but you cracking up
I'm with your girl when she back it up
Pass me the sticks and I'm acting up, knocking it out and she ti-ti-ti-tapping up
Do it for fans and the clapping up
Walking in Gucci, they rack it up
I swear these Benjamin's standing up
I put 'em to sleep when I'm stacking up

Whenever December rolls around, the thought, musically speaking, is to put on Christmas music. Songs like "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" or "White Christmas." But as we all know Christmas isn't the only important celebration when the calendar year ends. For many, Hanukkah is an important time of year. A time worth celebrating. A time where music can be essential.

Here below, we wanted to explore three Hanukkah songs that have always put a smile on people's faces. A trio of tracks that both acknowledge and celebrate the time of year. Indeed, these are three Hanukkah songs to put you in the festival holiday spirit.

"The Chanukah Song" by Adam Sandler from What the Hell Happened to Me? (1996)

For all those people who think they're the only ones who celebrate Hanukkah, comedian and Saturday Night Live veteran Adam Sandler wrote a song to enumerate many of the famous and successful folks who are also of the Jewish faith. From baseball player Rod Carew to Henry Winkler. Indeed, Sandler sings proudly about all his fellow Jews, offering,

Put on your yarmulke
Here comes Chanukah
So much funukkah
To celebrate Chanukah
Chanukah is the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights

When you feel like the only kid in town without a Christmas tree
Here's a list of people who are Jewish just like you and me

"The Dreidel Song" by Julie Silver from It's Chanukah Time (2010)

This song is probably the first one kids learn about the Jewish faith and the Hanukkah season. Here below, it's performed by singer Julie Silver, who gives it an almost country twang with slider guitars and the full band. On the tune, she sings the famed origin story of the dreidel, the toy that many young Jewish kids get to play with as young children. Silver sings over an acoustic,

I had a little dreidel, I made it out of clay
When it's dry and ready oh dreidel I will play
I made it out of clay!

"The Latke Song" by Debbie Friedman from Light These Lights (2007)

This song, which comes from Debbie Friedman's 2007 LP Light These Lights, includes lyrics that show what it would be like if a latke could talk. For those who don't know what a latke is, it's a potato pancake made by shredding the vegetable and frying it and then serving it with sour cream or apple sauce (yum!). And here, Friedman sings,

I am a latke, I am a latke
& I am waiting for Chanukah to come
I am a latke, I am latke
& I am waiting for Chanukah to come

In the 1970s, popular music was getting a little ... well, weird. Rock and roll was arguably at its peak. Disco and rap music were coming into fashion, as was punk. Suddenly genres were splintering out and experimentation was key. And some of those methods began to enter holiday music, too. No longer was the stuff meant to sound like chestnuts on a roaring fire. Now they were electrified.

Here below, we wanted to explore three examples. A trio of songs from rockers who wrote Christmas songs for their fans. Indeed, these are three classic rock Christmas songs from the 1970s that are as good today as they were then.

[RELATED: 3 Eternal Songs by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons That Recall the Early Days of Rock and Roll]

"Feliz Navidad" by José Feliciano from Feliz Navidad (1970)

A simple but bright and beautiful bilingual Christmas song from the Puerto Rican artist José Feliciano. The songwriter was feeling homesick when he wrote the tune and while it only contains 19 words in total, the song expresses exactly what Feliciano wanted. It's warm and welcoming and has since stood the test of time. It will be a song played for decades to come. And on it, he sings,

Feliz navidad
Feliz navidad
Feliz navidad, prospero año y felicidad

Feliz navidad
Feliz navidad
Feliz navidad, prospero año y felicidad

I want to wish you a merry Christmas

"Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney (Single, 1979)

This standalone single released by the former Beatle is remarkably one of his most famous songs. That's what happens when it comes to holiday tunes—because they have a place in culture literally every year, they are repeated and repeated even beyond more creative or groundbreaking works. And on this simple tune from Paul McCartney, he sings about Christmas, the moon in the sky, and having a wonderful time. But thanks to his ear for melody, it has become a classic. On it, he sings,

The mood is right
The spirit's up
We're here tonight
And that's enough

Simply having a wonderful Christmastime
Simply having a wonderful Christmastime

"Happy Xmas (War is Over)" by John & Yoko/The Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir (1971)

Speaking of former Beatles, this song from John Lennon and Yoko Ono is another Christmas classic. On it, he espouses peace and tells us war could be over right now if we, as a people, wanted it. And while that has yet to come to pass, the thought, like the song, is timeless. And on this tune, Lennon sings about Christmas, offering,

So this is Christmas
And what have you done?
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Christmas
I hope you had fun
The near and the dear ones
The old and the young

The 1950s were a long time ago. They are as far from us today as the mid-1800s were from the '50s. That's a wild thought. But because of the power of recorded music, we are able to enjoy some of the songs from that decade today as if they came out a few weeks ago.

Here below, we wanted to explore three songs from the 1950s. But not just songs—Christmas songs! It's that time of year to dive into holiday playlists and when it comes to Christmas songs, more often than not the older the songs, the better. Classic nostalgia is what so many of us want this time of year. Indeed, these are three Christmas songs from the 1950s that are as good now as they were then.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas (If Only In My Dreams)" by Frank Sinatra from A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra (1957)

There are few singers you'd rather hear croon out Christmas songs than the iconic lounge singer Frank Sinatra. His voice just sounds like Americana nostalgia. For decades, he has been heard in living rooms all across the country thanks to his smooth singing style. And on this song, his talent is at the forefront. Released on his 1957 album A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra, he sings the song that was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943, offering,

I'll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

"Frosty the Snowman" by Nat King Cole (1950)

This classic winter song, which was first recorded by by Gene Autry in 1950, was cut shortly after in the same year by Nat King Cole. With his warm, lively voice, Cole sings the classic story about the snowman who came to life. It's a vision so many of us think about during the holidays as the white powder falls from the sky. As kids, we run out to roll the snow into big orbs to create our snowman and maybe, just maybe, he'll come to life as Cole sings. Indeed, he offers,

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say
He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day

"Blue Christmas" by Elvis Presley from Elvis' Christmas Album (1957)

While most Christmas songs are peppy and happy, this one from "The King" is on the more melancholy side. Using his deep voice, Elvis sings about being lonesome on the holiday without the love of his life. He's so compelling the tune ends up feeling inviting and cozy. How does he do it? However he does, on this tune, he sings,

I'll have a blue Christmas without you
I'll be so blue just thinking about you
Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree
Won't be the same dear, if you're not here with me

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
That's when those blue memories start calling
You'll be doing all right
With your Christmas of white
But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas

Christmastime is a wholesome time. It's a time for family, welcoming lights strung around a tree, warm fires in the fireplace, and nice dinners before bedtime. Christmas is also an occasion for music, from The Nutcracker ballet to Bing Crosby's timeless singing voice. But the holiday season also makes room for a few songs that aren't quite so wholesome.

Here below, we wanted to explore three naughty Christmas songs. A trio of tracks that don't play on the traditional themes of wholesome family togetherness. Rather, they play on more adult themes. Indeed, these are three titillating, naughty Christmas songs to fill your Christmas stockings.

"Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt from Eartha Kitt (1953)

This supremely flirty Christmas song is bolstered by actress/singer Eartha Kitt's unique voice. And on the song, she bats her eyelashes at Santa Claus, asking for expensive furs, a car, a yacht, a house, and more. But if you were Santa, wouldn't you give it to her? Yuh-huh! The beautiful Kitt, known for her role as Catwoman, sings on the tune,

Santa baby, I want a yacht and really that's not a lot
Been an angel all year
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa honey, one little thing I really need
The deed to a platinum mine
Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking with the duplex and checks
Sign your 'x' on the line
Santa cutie, and hurry down the chimney tonight

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by The Jackson 5 from Jackson 5 Christmas Album (1970)

This song, which was originally written by Tommie Connor and has since been covered by numerous artists, perhaps was done best by the family band The Jackson 5. The song works well when sung by young Michael Jackson, as the lyrics tell the story of a child seeing his mother kissing who he thinks to be Santa Claus on Christmas Eve night. Of course, the presumed Santa is really the kid's father dressed up in a red suit. But the wide-eyed kid is none the wiser. Still, the song gives visions of a romance between the parents—or maybe mom really did give Santa a smooch! As Jackson sings,

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus (kissing, kissing Santa Claus)
Underneath the mistletoe last night
She didn't see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom, fast asleep

Then I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus (tickle, tickle, Santa Claus)
Underneath his beard so snowy white
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

"All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey from Merry Christmas (1994)

This holiday season, when you hear those chimes come in over the holiday store speakers or on your radio, you know Mariah Carey's big voice is about to shine through next. She is, after all, the contemporary Queen of Christmas. And it's largely thanks to this sultry-sweet song "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Carey, who is one of the most beautiful and bodacious pop stars in recent memory, gives this song a little extra spice thanks to furry-fringed outfits and holiday style. After all, she is singing a holiday-themed love song about desire. Indeed, she croons,

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you

It's hard to write a hit song. The task itself seems hard enough. But to write two songs that rocket up the charts? Well, that just seems like a minor miracle. Nevertheless, there are a number of bands out there that have achieved that feat and lived to tell the tale!

Here below, we wanted to explore three musical acts you might be surprised wrote two chart-topping hits. Three familiar names but ones you might not be so sure achieved the rare deed of composing two hit songs. Indeed, these are three two-hit wonders you're surprised are two-hit wonders.

The once-lead singer for the R&B group Dru Hill later went solo and released two songs that hit the charts in a major way—"Thong Song," which peaked at No. 3 in 2000 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Incomplete," which hit the top spot. With his brash style and elegant singing, Sisqó even made singing about itty-bitty underwear a topic of mainstream conversation.

Scottish singer KT Tunstall was a phenomenon in the mid-2000s thanks to her supremely catchy song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," which hit No. 20 on the vaunted Billboard Hot 100. With her whoo-hoos and acoustic guitar, she became a memorable singer in pop culture, finding herself on late-night shows and mix CDs galore. Then she followed that up with the hit "Suddenly I See," which hit No. 21 on the Hot 100.

Christmastime is a time for music. And while most of us think about the older songs—the Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra songs—there are a swath of more recent songs from artists that are worthy of time on your yule-time playlists.

Here below, we wanted to explore a trio of tunes from the 1980s that make for great holiday tunes. A trio of tracks written and recorded from popular bands from the decade that remain timeless today. Indeed, these are three Christmas songs from the 1980s that still rule the airwaves.

"Last Christmas" by Wham! from Music From the Edge of Heaven (1986)

A romantic Christmas song from the pop duo Wham! The track, which hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, is about giving your love to someone for the holiday only to have them throw it back in your face. So, what do you do? Well, vocalist George Michael just found someone else to give his heart to. Singing over synths and an electronic drum beat, Michael made a classic, offering,

Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special

"Christmas in Hollis" by Run-DMC from A Very Special Christmas (1987)

So many Christmas songs are about a warm home surrounded by green trees and snow. But what about Christmas in the city? This song by the iconic rap trio Run-DMC answers that question as the hip-hop artists rap about what the holiday was like for them in Hollis, Queens, in New York City. On the track, which hit No. 22 on the Billboard Holiday 100, the group rhymes about seeing Santa in the city park,

It was December 24th on Hollis Ave after dark
When I seen a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached him very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer
But then I was illin' 'cause the man had a beard
And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared
So I turned my head a second and the man was gone
But he must've dropped his wallet smack dead on the lawn
I picked the wallet up, but then I took a pause
Took out the license and it cold said, "Santa Claus"

"Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses from A Christmas Record (1981)

A sublimely catchy song from The Waitresses, this song, which hit a number of spots on various Billboard charts, could be thought as rap music. Written as hip-hop was growing in the East Coast, the Akron, Ohio-born band talk-sings about to-do lists and other various activities that must be done during the holiday season. In fact, it can be so much the group says they might even skip Christmas this year, offering,

Hardly dashing through the snow
'Cause I bundled up too tight
Last minute have to do
A few cards a few calls
'Cause it's "RSVP"
No thanks, no party lights
It's Christmas eve, gonna relax
Turned down all of my invites
Last fall I had a night to myself

And while most of us think about the older songs—the Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra songs—there are a swath of more recent songs from artists that are worthy of time on your yule time playlists. When a band writes and releases a hit song, it's reasonable to expect their name to live on. That should be doubly so when the act achieves the feat a remarkable two times! But amazingly, that isn't always the case for every act. Sometimes like a ship in the night, the group comes and goes and they are not remembered past a few short months.

Here below, we wanted to explore three bands that showcase that reality. A trio of two-hit wonder groups that released songs that rocketed up the charts but who no one talks about today and you, reader, may not even remember. Indeed, these are three two-hit wonders you actually may never have heard of in your entire life.

"Tenderness" by General Public from All the Rage (1984) and "I'll Take You There" from Threesome: Music From the Motion Picture (1994)

This British-born new wave band released two songs 10 years apart that raced up the charts. The band's song "Tenderness" from their 1984 LP All the Rage hit No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, and their cover of The Staples Singers tune "I'll Take You There," which was released in 1994 for the soundtrack for the film Threesome, hit No. 22 on the Hot 100. This made the band one of the few acts to achieve charting songs in different decades. Despite this, General Public is not a group these days often discussed amongst music fans.

"He Loves U Not" and "This Is Me" by Dream from It Was All a Dream (2000)

Formed in 1998, the all-girl quartet Dream released their debut studio album It Was All a Dream in 2001 and with it came two popular songs. The LP's debut single, "He Loves U Not," went all the way to the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That pop track was followed up by "This Is Me," which didn't do quite as well but still hit No. 39 on the Hot 100. Today, though, the group is not talked about very often, despite their early millennium success.

"Right Here, Right Now" and "Real, Real, Real" by Jesus Jones from Doubt (1991)

In 1991, Jesus Jones released their sophomore studio LP Doubt. With it came two popular songs—"Right Here, Right Now," which hit No. 2 in 1990 ahead of the album release, and "Real, Real, Real," which claimed the No. 4 spot. Those were big accomplishments for the British-born group. Yet, when was the last time music fans uttered the name Jesus Jones? It just goes to show how fickle both fandom and the industry can be!

Over the years, there have been plenty of lounge singers who have put their honeyed voices to holiday songs. But while most of them performed in the early or middle part of the 20th century, there is a new name who has taken up the mantle. Standing tall in the lineage of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and others is the Burnaby, British Columbia-born Michael Bublé.

With a soft yet full voice, Bublé has helped bring to life a slew of terrific Christmas songs for modern audiences. And here below, we wanted to explore three of those offerings. A trio of tracks from the rich-voiced singer. Indeed, these are three instant classic Christmas songs from Michael Bublé that will put you in the holiday spirit.

"It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas" from Christmas (2011)

In 2011, Bublé released his holiday album Christmas, and the work rocketed up the top of the charts and hit the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. At the time, it marked the singer's third No. 1 album. And today it's perhaps his best known, even though he's released several great records of original music, too. The LP opens with this song "It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas," and on it, the satin-voiced singer bounces like flames on a yule log, singing,

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Everywhere you go
Take a look at the five and ten, it's glistening once again
With candy canes and silver lanes that glow

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Toys in every store
But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be
On your own front door

"Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" from Christmas (2011)

Also on Bublé's No. 1 Christmas record, this song is one of excitement. It transports the listener to a time when they were young and the anticipation of presents were on the way. Your mind sees Jolly Ol' Saint Nick in his sleigh going from rooftop to snowy rooftop bringing his big bag of presents for all the girls and boys. And the butterflies in your stomach begin to flutter. On the tune, Bublé sings,

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He's making a list
He's checking it twice
He's gonna find out who's naughty or nice
Santa Claus is coming to town

https://youtu.be/R8CBoVc_OMI

"A Holly Jolly Christmas" from Christmas (2011)

A third track from Christmas, Bublé offers his signature welcoming, warm voice on this song. He showcases flare and style in that lounge-singer vein. He's grinning, he's dancing nimbly on the lyrics, and he's offering well wishes for all. Singing over a rockabilly-esque guitar, Bublé shines, offering,

Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
Now I don't know if there'll be snow
But have a cup of cheer

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet

The holidays are upon us. First it's Thanksgiving and then December with its plethora of celebratory times, including December 25. Indeed, Christmas is just around the corner. And while it can be a very fun time for many, it can also be a subject to put to punk rock. To wit, these three songs here below.

We wanted to explore three lesser known punk rock songs that take Christmastime and put it on its head. Subversion is always a good approach when it comes to songwriting, so why not try it with the holiday season. Yes, these are three deliriously fun anti-Christmas punk rock songs for you to enjoy this season.

"There's No Christmas on the Moon" by Thee Spivies from Christmas in Heaven (1996)

Like many punk rock songs, this one travels at about a million miles an hour. It's as much about pace as it is about melody and rhythm. The song is silly, too. It's about being on the moon and therefore going without the holiday. Indeed, the band sings over smashing drums and lighting-quick guitars,

And now I'm stranded on the moon
And I won't be seeing Santa Claus real soon
'Cuz Santa ain't no man in a space suit
'Cuz there's no Christmas on the moon!

"Santa Ain't Coming for Christmas" by Rocket 455 from Go To Hell (2011)

This modern punk rock song is built on giant guitars, shouting kids, and lyrics about being a bad, bad boy. Some songs embrace the magic and wonder of Christmas and some eschew that. And of course it takes all kinds in this world. This song from Rocket 455 definitely falls in the latter category. And on it, the song features lyrics belted out,

Santa! Ain't Coming This Christmas!
Santa! Ain't Coming This Christmas!
Santa! Ain't Coming This Christmas!
Santa! Ain't Coming This Christmas!

"Don't Believe in Christmas" by The Sonics (1965)

This song from the groundbreaking Seattle-born garage punk rock band The Sonics was released in 1965 as a split single with the local Pacific Northwest rockers The Wailers (their song was "Christmas Spirit??"). On the song the band sings about not believing in the holiday because they didn't get a present last year. It's a repetitive, buzzy song from the band that made songs like "The Witch" famous. Bolstered by organs and big percussion, the song is a classic anti-Christmas offering. Sings the band,

Well mom and dad said be good
So I did what I should
I hung my stocking on a wall
I didn't get a thing at all

I don't believe in Christmas
I don't believe in Christmas
I don't believe in Christmas
'Cause I didn't get nothin' last year

Right now is the greatest time of the year to be a sports fan. The World Series is in full swing, the NBA just started its season, the WNBA just crowned a champion and the NFL is in mid-season form. What does that mean? Well, the national anthem is being sung several times a day to open each of these sporting events.

And while so many of those offerings are delightful, occasionally we hear horrible renditions. Here below, we wanted to examine three such examples. A trio of performances of the national anthem that will make you want to cover your ears and run for cover. Indeed, these are three of the worst national anthem performances in sports history.

[RELATED: Ingrid Andress Makes First Career Move After Botched National Anthem Performance]

But hey, there's no accounting for taste!

https://youtu.be/hMzIk2pUuNU

Carl Lewis (1993)

While track star Carl Lewis was trying on his performance (unlike Rosanne above), he nevertheless didn't do much better ahead of a game in 1993 between the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets. Did his voice fail him at the worst moment? Did he think that since he was such a star at the Olympics he could do whatever he set his mind to? Either way, this was a fail and has haunted an otherwise pristine performance career for the track star.

https://youtu.be/BW4qLBLPVMs

Ingrid Andress (2024)

At least Rosanne and Lewis aren't professional singers—they can always hang their hat on that. In the 1990s the former was still funny and the latter was still incredible on the track. But in 2024, singer Ingrid Andress betrayed her fans by performing the national anthem at this year's MLB Home Run Derby as if she'd never sung a note before. She was ridiculed online and shortly after claimed she had a drinking problem, which is what led to the issues. Either way, she was bad.
