Sometimes, feeling stuck in your own life can be a weight that’s impossible to carry. With her haunting new single “Over Everything,” singer/songwriter Ashley Monroe taps into that desperation for a fresh start.

Set alongside a dreamy and mysterious soundscape, Monroe’s raw vocals plea for the chance to fly away from what’s haunting her.

One of these nights while I’m sleeping
I’ll get to take up in my dreams
I’ll be free from the weight that’s on my shoulders
Learning how to use my wings
To get over everything

“As a songwriter, it’s always been so interesting to see how the feeling of a song can mold and shift and shape with the years,” Monroe shared in a statement. “The life of the song versus the life of an artist. ‘Over Everything’ is one of those songs.

“I wrote it a few years ago with Al Anderson and Scott Stepakoff, but it feels the most real from where I’m standing now,” she explained. “As much as this song is about looking back, it’s even more so the attitude and feeling I have in looking ahead, ‘learning how to use my wings’ in this new chapter of my career.”

“Over Everything” is Ashley Monroe’s first new solo single since her fifth studio album, Rosegold, was released in 2021. Over the past two years, the award-winning songsmith has been steadily crafting fresh material. She’s stayed busy co-writing gems like “If You Were Mine,” Miranda Lambert’s recent collaboration with Leon Bridges. Earlier this year, she joined fellow songwriting talent Ben Chapman for their reflective duet, “Is It Ever Really Gone.”

Monroe hasn’t yet announced if a sixth record is on the way. Still, “Over Everything” seems to serve as a marker of a new chapter in her already-impressive musical career. The track feels and sounds like a moment of creative evolution. For Monroe, it also has close ties to her formative past.

“For me, this project looks and feels like a homecoming for my soul, so we decided to take a team of creatives to the area I was raised in, in East Tennessee, to shoot the visuals,” explained Monroe. “The video for ‘Over Everything’ celebrates all the small details — down to my Granni’s quilt — that have played a part in shaping who I am.”
