“We really didn’t set out to do it that way, but when we realized that was one of the images we had, really, we realized the whole process of making this record was, we all have different aspects of ourselves, some we love to embrace and some we do not love to embrace,” she explained.
McBryde took the stage on GMA and performed “The Devil I Know,” explaining a little about the song before launching into the performance. According to McBryde, the song is a response to comments from record labels, fans, and people in her life.
As GMA host Michael Strahan began, when someone is in the public eye they’re constantly having comments and opinions thrown at them. “The Devil I Know” responds to that. “I think it doesn’t matter what you do for a living,” said McBryde, “[there’s] somebody, somewhere thinking that they know how to tell you how to do it better than you do.”
Ashley McBryde Discovers Loving Different Aspects of Herself on Recent Album The Devil I Know
Before she performed, Ashley McBryde added, “This whole process has been not really just coming to terms with it, but learning how to fall in love with all those aspects [of yourself].”
Some lines exhibit the response she spoke about, such as the chorus. There, she sings, Momma says, get my a– to church / Daddy says, get me a– to work/ Doctor says I gotta give up on these smokes / Everybody’s got something to say / About how I gotta change my ways / But I got something to say of my own / Hell, there’s hell everywhere I go / I’m just sticking with the devil I know.
“The Devil I Know” is a rollicking country jam with a rocking beat. Overall, the lyrics remind listeners to ignore unsolicited comments, and McBryde puts her textured vocals on display when she performs live.
