American Songwriter is pleased to co-present with The Stone Fox two of our favorite songwriters on Wednesday, January 23, 2013.

John McCauley, of the “divine and messy” rock and roll band Deer Tick as well as the new project Diamond Rugs, has had a prolific songwriting career since the release of 2007’s excellent War Elephant. As far back as 2009, McCauley, who is now based in Nashville, discussed the influence of country and folk songwriting icons like Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt, and John Prine.

Robert Ellis, a Houston native now based in Nashville, released his 2011 album, Photographs, on New West Records. We praised the album for its “plainspoken lyricism” and Ellis’ ability to craft “elegantly rustic melodies,” and once even declared, “If this young Texan is the future of country music, the future looks good.”

The Stone Fox opened in September 2012, a partnership between siblings Elise and William Tyler. The restaurant and music venue has a focus on local beer and liquor and quality ingredients, often sourced from the their own garden across the street.

The Tylers grew up in the musical world of 1970s-‘80s Music Row and hope the Stone Fox (named after a song by local cult country-rock outfit Area Code 615) helps to highlight a cross-generation of songwriting. Their father, Dan Tyler, was a songwriter who worked with Eddie Rabbitt while William Tyler will release his second solo album, Impossible Truth, this spring on Merge Records.

$10, 9pm. Limited advance tickets are available at Grimey’s New and Preloved Music, The Groove, and the Stone Fox on Monday, Dec 17th.
