Have you heard of Rick Ross? He’s the rapper who’s “deeper than rap.” Ross’s recent feud with 50 Cent helped push Ross’s latest album, Deeper Than Rap, to the no. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 this week, selling 158,000 copies like they were “beef”-infused hot cakes. This is Ross’s third trip to no. 1, having reached the summit before in 2008 with Trilla and 2006 with Port of Miami. How’s the Hannah Montana soundtrack supposed to compete with that?

Upstart rapper Asher Roth has awhile to go before he gets to the same level as a Rick Ross — his debut Asleep at the Bread Aisle came in at #5. Also invading the chart’s upper echelon are British mope-rock stalwarts Depeche Mode, who’s new album, Sounds of the Universe, comes in at #3. According to Billboard.com, this is actually the lowest debut sales week for the evergreen band since 1991.
What other albums debuted this week? Lacuna Coil’s Shallow Life at #16, Jars of Clay’s The Long Fall Back To Earth at #29, the Pet Shop Boys’ Yes at #32, and Manchester Orchestra’s Mean Everything to Nothing at #37.
According to Billboard, overall album sales this week came to 6.17 million units, up 3% compared to last week, and down 10% compared to the same week of 2008 (6.86 million). Year to date album sales have reached 117.9 million, down 12% compared to the same point last year (134.2 million).
