American Music Awards to Skip Another Year, Will Air in 2025

The American Music Awards will not take place for the second consecutive year. The awards show failed to take place for the first time in nearly fifty years in 2023. Today (August 6), Dick Clark Productions and CBS announced that the award show is scheduled to air in May 2025. This year, a 50th anniversary special will air instead of the awards show.

Dick Clark created the American Music Awards for ABC in 1974 after the network lost the rights to broadcast the Grammy Awards to CBS. The awards show aired on the network until the contract ran out in 2022. After the contract with ABC ran out, the AMAs needed to find a new broadcast home. As a result, the event didn’t take place in 2023. Currently, Dick Clark Productions is partnering with CBS to air “the world’s largest fan-voted award show” per Variety.

The AMAs aren’t just moving to a new network. They will also move to a different time of year. Originally, the event took place in January or February. Then, in 2003, ABC moved the show to November or December. Next year, when the AMAs return, they’ll air in May.

American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special

The American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special will air on October 6 at 8 p.m. Eastern time on CBS. The special will also be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+ with Showtime. Paramount+ subscribers without the Showtime add-on can watch it on-demand the next day.

The special will celebrate 50 years of AMA history with performances, artist interviews, special guests, and more. CBS and Dick Clark Productions released a statement regarding the special’s content. “The program will feature themed highlights from AMAs’ expansive show archives, each culminating with an original performance or artist interview,” the statement read. “Segments will look back on the evolution of specific artists and genres at the AMAs, as well as award and performance milestones.”

Performances will include “collaborations, debuts from today’s hottest stars, and appearances from AMA legends.”

The list of performers will be announced in the coming weeks.
