Amanda Palmer, High School Kids to Star in Neutral Milk Hotel Musical

Amanda Palmer (solo artist and member of the neo-cabaret act the Dresden Dolls) will star in a theatrical version of Neutral Milk Hotel’s 1998 cult classic In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, Pitchfork reports. But don’t look for it on Broadway. Palmer will be performing alongside a troupe of high school students at her old stomping r, Lexington High School, in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Obsessive Neutral Milk Hotel fans, take note — the play will run for only three days, from May 7-9.

“It’s an original play about music and the Holocaust written by insanely talented drama students with musical accompaniment by me,” Palmer tells the site. “My high school theater director, Steven Bogart, is one of my biggest artistic mentors and I’ve been trying to get back there since I left.” Though the play is only scheduled for a couple shows at the moment, Palmer is leaving the door open for future performances: “I’m not sure what kind of life it’ll have after the spring. We might try to take it elsewhere.”

But is a concept album about the Holocaust, incest, despair and two-headed boys appropriate material for a high school play? Maybe, maybe not. We can’t wait to read the reviews in the local paper.
