He’s a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. On All Hat and No Cattle, though, Chris Shiflett focuses exclusively on the country side of things, twanging his way through nine honky-tonk classics and one rootsy original. It’s his second album with the Dead Peasants, the country-rock side project that keeps him busy when he isn’t playing lead guitar for the Foo Fighters.

The band recorded All Hat and No Cattle in 2012, tracking all the instruments live before overdubbing Shiflett’s vocals. The guitar sounds are predictably killer, but Shiflett really lets loose on the vocals, blasting his way through Waylon Jennings’ “I Don’t Think Hank Done it That Way” and Buck Owens’ “King of Fools” with all the grit, grins and gusto of the originals. He’s not giving up his day job anytime soon… but if he wanted to, the guy would have some options. Stream the full thing below, and look for the album next week.
