A sweet love story ends in tragedy in this heartbreaking new music video

Luke Combs has already scored two back-to-back No. 1 hits with “Hurricane” and “When It Rains It Pours.” He’s clearly on track for a third chart-topper with his brand-new single, “One Number Away,” and the video only adds to the heartbreak of the song.

Luke serves as the narrator in the clip as a man and woman play out the storyline of a couple who had some really good times over the course of their relationship. We see them cooking together and then making a wish as the clock on the stove reads 11:11.

At the top of the video the guy is listening to a voicemail message from his girl. She tells him it’s 11:11, but she doesn’t need to make a wish because she’s already the luckiest girl in the world since she has him.

There’s also a flirty scene in the shower where he draws a heart in the steam on the glass door. Yeah, this couple is in L-O-V-E.

So, why aren’t they together?

Listening to the lyrics, you hear Luke singing about getting into a fight. There’s some misunderstanding going on between them, but he finds a four-leaf clover and leaves it on her car. It’s a sign of how lucky the two of them are to have found each other, and she gets in the car to go see him. Unfortunately, she doesn’t make it, and we see she’s leaving him a voicemail as her car crashes.

As if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, we only see her being loaded into the ambulance, so it’s not clear if she makes it or not.

Way to rip our hearts out, Luke!

The video for “One Number Away” adds an element of high drama to the song, but Luke feels like the message in the lyrics is universal.

He tells Rare Country, “I think everybody’s been in that situation where they don’t want to call that person and they end up calling them anyway. Everybody in the room that day when we were writing it was just kind of like, ‘Man, we’ve all been there.’ So, if we’ve all been there, there’s probably thousands of people who’ve been there. I think people can relate to it. I think it has a great melody, and hopefully it’s a hit.”

Thousands of Luke’s fans will get to hear “One Number Away” when he sings it on his “Don’t Tempt Me with a Good Time” tour. Newcomer Ashley McBryde is joining him on the trek. They’ve got two sold-out shows at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium coming up this weekend, and Luke looks forward to celebrating in that Music City milestone.

He tells us, “[It’s] pretty close to the top of the bucket list. I played the [Grand Ole] Opry there last year. I played Darius [Rucker’s] benefit there. But having my own show, having it be two nights and having it sell out in 58 minutes — both shows — was pretty unbelievable. You can’t plan for it, but you just got to roll with the punches. I wish it was bigger, man, so more fans could come. I would have loved to have seen how many tickets we could have sold.”
