Veteran stadium rockers Coldplay and soul newcomer Duffy were at the top of the list among those nominated for Britain’s prestigious BRIT Awards, the British equivalent of the Grammys.

Coldplay picked up several nominations for their latest, critically acclaimed album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Chris Martin and company were nominated for both Best British Album, Best British Live Act, Best British Single, and Best British Group, the final of which Coldplay is up against Radiohead, Elbow, Girls Aloud, and Take That.

Competing with Coldplay for Best British Album is Duffy’s debut, Rockferry. She is also nominated for Best British Female Solo Artist, Best British Breakthrough Act, and Best British Single, for her chart-topper “Mercy.”

Also faring well in the nominations is Mercury Prize winning group Elbow, who walked away with three nods (Best British Group, Best British Album, and Best British Live Act).

Included in the international categories are American acts Beyonce, Kanye West, and Kings of Leon. Girls Aloud, U2, Kings of Leon, and Duffy are scheduled to perform.

Winners, chosen from a vote by over 1,000 British music industry insiders, will be presented on February 18.
