Get out your flannel shirts and holey jeans, Ten is back. Pearl Jam has announced plans to release four new editions of their 1991 debut. All four editions contain a remastered version of the original album and a new version, re-mixed by the band’s frequent producer Brendan O’Brien, who produced the four albums after Ten. While that’s it for the two-LP Vinyl Edition, the other three versions come stuffed with extras and newly designed packaging. The Legacy Edition comes in a mini-LP style package, containing the two versions of Ten and six previously unreleased bonus tracks. The Deluxe Edition adds a DVD of Pearl Jam’s performance on MTV’s Unplugged from 1992, also previously unreleased. The one for the hardcore fans is the Super Deluxe Edition. It has what the Deluxe Edition has (obviously), plus the two vinyl LPs of Ten, and a double LP of Drop in the Park – Live at Magnuson Park in Seattle on September 20, 1992 with 5.1 one surround audio mixed by O’Brien. But wait! There’s more! Inside the box there’s also a replica of Vedder’s notebook compiling personal notes and images from the Ten years, a double-sided print commemorating the Drop in the Park show, and more memorabilia. It also contains what may be the Holy Grail for Pearl Jam fans: a crystal clear recording of the original “Momma-Son” three-song demo on a replica cassette. The songs “Once,” “Alive,” and “Footsteps” were what emerged from instrumentals sent to Vedder by Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready as an audition of sorts. He recorded vocals, sent it back and was in the band a few weeks later. Until now, only low-quality bootlegs of the tape have been heard.
The reissue of Ten is the beginning of a two-year catalog re-release leading up to Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary in 2011. They are currently in the studio with O’Brien working on their ninth studio album, which they plan to release sometime in the coming year. All four versions of Ten will be available March 24, 2009, but the Super Deluxe Edition can be pre-ordered now at pearljam.com.
