Zach Bryan Tells Inconsistent Stories About the Inspiration Behind His Most Popular Song

“Something in the Orange” is Zach Bryan’s most popular song. He released it as a single from his major label debut American Heartbreak on April 22, 2022. Since then, the song has garnered more than a billion streams on Spotify alone. While the song resonates deeply with many of his fans, it has a relatively unremarkable origin story. However, that story has changed.

In the song, Bryan sings about the end of a relationship. However, he holds out hope that things aren’t completely over. But a breakup didn’t inspire him to write the song. Instead, it was a peaceful sunset. “Everyone thinks it was over some deep, dark thing, and it was just me in a cabin in Wisconsin,” he wrote in a now-deleted tweet, explaining the song’s origin. “I thought about the word ‘orange’ and I was watching the sunset and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a cool story to tell in a song,” he added. During a recent show, Bryan told a completely different story.

“Everyone thinks ‘Something in the Orange’ is some deeply-rooted song,” Bryan said while introducing the song at a recent show. “One time, I got stood up on a date, and I wrote it. That’s the whole story,” he added.

Fans took to the comments of the above video to call out the inconsistencies in his stories. “He is changing the backstories on his songs all the time,” one commenter wrote. “I don’t think he even knows his own truth anymore,” another quipped. “It’s because he’s a pathological liar and a forgetful one, at that,” another added, sharing their theory on the ever-changing stories behind the songs.

Zach Bryan Tells Inconsistent Stories Behind “28”

Zach Bryan changed the backstory behind “28,” another of his most popular songs after his public breakup with Brianna Chickenfry.

He told the story behind the song on Twitter shortly after releasing The Great American Bar Scene. “Boston, our puppy, was going into surgery, and I told Briana, ‘How lucky are we?’ to have had a puppy so beautiful. And she came out just fine,” he posted. “I wrote [“28”] the next day because I felt like the luckiest man on the planet,” he added.

However, during a November tour stop in Portland, Oregon, he told a different story. “I wrote this song because one night, me and all the boys were bowling in New York City. And I felt lucky to have each and every one of them and I was so glad to be alive,” he said while introducing the song to the crowd.
