4 Deliciously Dark Love Songs From Rock Music History

Rock music has produced countless heartwrenching love songs through the years. Some songs, however, have sinister backstories and lyrical meanings that go into much darker territory than you’d expect. Let’s dive into four iconic rock love songs that are deliciously dark!

1. “I Will Possess Your Heart” by Death Cab For Cutie

“I Will Possess Your Heart” is quite a beautiful alt-rock tune from Death Cab For Cutie on a musical level. Lyrically, though, this track is downright terrifying. This eight-minute ode to being absolutely obsessed with someone who has no idea of the strength of their piner’s intensity is not for the weak.

“You gotta spend some time with me / And I know that you’ll find, love / I will possess your heart” is just one arresting and spooky line from this 2007 song.

2. “Every Breath You Take” by The Police

This is the creepy rock love song of creepy rock love songs. The instrumentation is cool and even a little seductive. However, “Every Breath You Take” by The Police is the kind of love song nobody wants to be on the receiving end of. This soft rock hit is sung from the perspective of a dangerous stalker, rather than a lover.

A lot of listeners missed lines like “Every move you make, every vow you break / Every smile you fake, every claim you stake / I’ll be watching you” and opted to use this 1983 “love” song at their weddings.

3. “The One I Love” by R.E.M.

This one isn’t exactly a love song, though plenty of listeners seem to think so. But you can’t deny that lines like “This one goes out to the one I’ve left behind / A simple prop to occupy my time” aren’t jarring in the context of the song.

“The One I Love” by R.E.M. is often very much misunderstood. It only takes one thorough listen to understand that this alt-rock tune from 1987 is about using people to occupy your time, rather than genuinely loving someone.

4. “Run For Your Life” by The Beatles

The Beatles were once kings of rock love songs, but “Run For Your Life” is probably their creepiest ode to love ever.

Lines like “Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl / Than to be with another man” and “Catch you with another man / That’s the end little girl” are horrific, even if John Lennon was more or less poking fun at Elvis Presley.
