Ariana Grande Delivers a Mature Clapback at Those Criticising Her Appearance—and It Should Be Applauded

Having spent the majority of her adult life in the spotlight, Ariana Grande knows the good and bad that comes with fame. Over the years, she sold over 90 million albums and won several awards for her contributions to music. And continuing to expand her stardom, 2024 marked a big year for Grande. Back in March, she released her newest album, Eternal Sunshine. If that wasn’t enough, she also took over Hollywood with her newest film Wicked. With the new film dominating the box office, Grande discussed how she handled the backlash for her appearance.

During an interview, Grande offered her thoughts on the comments she often received about her looks. With Cynthia Erivo close by her side, the singer admitted, “I’ve been kind of doing this in front of the public and kind of been a specimen in a petri dish since I was 16 or 17, so I have heard it all.” She continued, “I’ve heard every version of it… of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons. But that’s everything from – even just the simplest thing – your appearance, you know?”

Ariana Grande Hopes People Protect Themselves From Negative Comments

Knowing that negative comments about one’s body aren’t just for celebrities, Grande explained how it can happen to any person.  “It’s hard to protect yourself from that noise, and I think that it’s uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on. Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner, and someone’s granny says, ‘Oh my God, you look skinnier! What happened?’ or ‘You look heavier! What happened?’”

Not wanting fans to deal with the same type of comments, Grande insisted, “You all can protect yourselves from that noise — whether it’s at a family reunion or online, if you gotta block people, I don’t care if you have to delete the app entirely — you keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say s**t.”

Again, having dealt with negative comments for well over a decade, Grande offered a solution. “I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what.”
