Ahead of the release of “High School Reunion” Honer sat down with American Songwriter to talk about the new track and his forthcoming EP.

Evan Honer on “High School Reunion”

In “High School Reunion” Evan Honer looks ahead to his 10-year reunion with trepidation. More specifically, he sings about the fear of seeing his first serious girlfriend at the function with someone new.

“I was in a relationship on and off for about four years. It was my first, like, real relationship and it was in high school. And, writing this song, I just thought about what it would be like if went to the high school reunion and I’m still not over this girl ten years later,” Honer said of the inspiration for the song. “It’s been, like, four years now and I’m not over it,” he added. “So, basically going through that scenario and thinking about what it would be like and how awkward it would be if she had someone else. That’s the concept that I was thinking of.”

Honer on Annabelle

“High School Reunion” isn’t the only song on Evan Honer’s new EP that’s about his high school girlfriend. All of the songs are about her and their relationship.

“This is my first project where everything comes together, in my head,” Honer said of Annabelle. “The first song is kind of me processing everything after it ended. The next one is ‘Lead Role’ which is also about how everything ended but from a weird perspective. Then, ‘High School Reunion.’ Then, ‘Annabelle’ which shows how it happened. And then the last song is basically just one long verse where I just get louder and louder, it’s called ‘Happy in the End,’” he explained.
