Many of the songs from his 2024 album Cold Beer & Country Music would have been right at home on the radio in the early or mid-‘90s. Richard Fagan and Robb Royer co-penned the song and Montgomery released it as the second single from his 1995 self-titled album. The song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and stayed there for three weeks. It went on to be named the publication’s top country song for 1995.

Zach Top Discusses His Throwback Sound

Earlier this year, Zach Top sat down with American Songwriter to discuss his album Cold Beer & Country Music. During the conversation, the “Use Me” singer revealed how he developed his throwback sound.

“I wouldn’t say I decided to go with a ‘90s sound. That’s the stuff that made me fall in love with country music,” Top revealed. “Beyond that, all those guys I loved in the ‘90s, I tried to go back and find their influences. Those guys were listening to Haggard and Jones and Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Ray Price, and stuff like that when they were coming up. So, I tried to go back to that stuff and get what I could out of there,” he added.

“I think through all my studying and delving back into all that stuff, I found my own little version of it,” he continued. “That’s all I know how to do. When I write or sing or play, that’s just what comes out. I guess I don’t know how to do nothing else. That’s just who I am.”
