Behind the Meaning of “That’s So True” by Gracie Abrams

I could go and read your mind
Think about your dumb face all the time
Living in your glass house, I’m outside, uh
Looking into big blue eyes
Did it just to hurt me, make me cry
Smiling through it all, yeah, that’s my life

The worst thing about a breakup is the love that’s left over–at least according to Abrams. She struggles with two competing ideas and emotions in this track. On one hand she’s heartbroken. On the other, the appeal of her ex partner is still holding strong.

She toys with the idea of warning his new girl about the issues she faced in her relationship. At the same time, she lays bare her insecurity. Kicking back on your couch, making eyes from across the room / Wait, I think I’ve been there too, she sings.

You’re an idiot, now I’m sure
Now I’m positive, I should go and warn her

Ooh, bet you’re thinking, “She’s so cool”
Kicking back on your couch, making eyes from across the room
Wait, I think I’ve been there too

Like many of us, Abrams can’t help but think about the moments her and her ex had together. The whole song reads like a stream of consciousness. She blurts out conflicting ideas–mirroring the darting mind of someone emotionally spiraling.

In the end, she lands on one idea: But I know what I know and you’re just another dude. It bodes well for her ability to move on from this heartbreak. Check out this Abrams track, below.

I’m sorry she’s missing it, sad, sad boy
Not my business, but I had to warn ya

Ooh, bet you’re thinking, “She’s so cool”
Kicking back on your couch, making eyes from across the room
Wait, I think I’ve been there too
Ooh, you’ve got me thinking, “She’s so cool”
But I know what I know and you’re just another dude
Ooh, that’s so true
