Blake Shelton left The Voice after 23 seasons saying that he wanted more downtime. Now, a little more than a year after exiting the show, the Oklahoma native is planning his return to reality TV. However, he won’t be reclaiming his big red chair. Instead, Shelton is partnering with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan for a new singing competition show. The Road will premiere on CBS next fall.

Deadline shared the news about Shelton’s next TV endeavor earlier today (November 11). The Road will be unlike shows such as American Idol or The Voice. Instead of having a crop of hopefuls performing for judges or coaches, they’ll be on tour with a headlining act attempting to win support from crowds across the country. They will serve as opening acts for the headlining star. If they win over enough fans, they’ll be allowed to perform in the next city. If not, they’ll be off the tour and out of the show.

Interestingly, though, Shelton isn’t the show’s headliner. They haven’t revealed who the superstar act will be.
Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan on The Road
MTV Entertainment Studios, David Glasser’s 101 Studios, and Lucky Horseshow Productions, founded by Blake Shelton and Lee Metzger will jointly produce the new series for CBS. Taylor Sheridan, Glasser, Shelton, and Metzger will serve as executive producers.
“I’m a big fan of Taylor’s incredible work, and I’m excited to team with him and my longtime collaborator, Lee, on The Road,” Shelton said about the new show. “I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent and giving them this platform,” he added.
“There is a revolution taking place in country music,” Sheridan said. “Building a platform with Blake for the next leaders of that revolution is an incredibly exciting venture,” he added. “No more shiny floors and studio audiences. This is where the rubber meets the road—literally. Get in the van, go to the next town, and win the crowd. Do it enough, and you become the next leader. Simple as that,” the Yellowstone creator said of the show’s concept.
