Before allegations that led to criminal charges came to light, Sean “Diddy” Combs was something of a cultural touchstone. As a result, many songs across several genres referenced Diddy in their lyrics. This includes Brooks & Dunn’s 2005 hit “Play Something Country.” Now, though, they’ve changed the lyrics while also firing proverbial shots at the hip-hop mogul.

A fan-captured video posted on TikTok showed the legendary country duo’s lyric change during a recent concert. The song’s second verse originally name-dropped Combs. Yeah, the band took a break, the DJ played P. Diddy. / She said, I didn’t come here to hear / Something thumping from the city. / I shaved my legs, I paid my money / Play something country. In the video below, they sing Yeah, the band took a break, the band played something sh—ty.

Brooks & Dunn Land a No. 1 Hit with “Play Something Country”
Penned by Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride, Brooks & Dunn released “Play Something Country” as the lead single from their 2005 album Hillbilly Deluxe. The song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It gave the duo their 20th and final chart-topping single to date. They recently re-recorded the song with Lainey Wilson for their upcoming collaborative album Reboot 2.
Recently, McBride talked about writing the song with Dunn in a YouTube video. “A song I wrote in 2005 is ‘Play Something Country.’ I wrote that with Ronnie Dunn while we were out touring,” he recalled. “It’s just a song that, Ronnie jumped up on the bus after a performance that night and said, ‘There was a hot chick down front yelling at me to play something country.’ We thought, ‘That’s a pretty good idea. That’s pretty cool.’ Then, we had that stupid guitar lick that neither one of us could play in the beginning. But we could hum the heck out of it,” he added. “So, we kept humming that and playing it on our acoustics. We wrote that song going down the road back in 2005 and it’s still alive. That’s the cool thing about music,” he concluded.
