3 Iconic Songs From the 2000s That Are Great To Sing Along To

In the 2000s, music was changing. The decade prior featured some heavy-hitting bands in the early part of the decade, from grunge icons like Nirvana to rap duos like Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. But in the latter half of the 1990s, pop stars, boy bands, and a brighter style of music began to creep in. Then when the 2000s hit, it was all pop-punk and melodic wonderment.

“Hey Ya!” by OutKast from Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003)

If you’ve ever said the phrase, “Shake it like a Polaroid picture,” then you have this song to thank. This song, which is credited to Outkast, is really an Andre 3000 track with the artist playing all the instruments and featured as each band member in the music video. Playing on the British Invasion craze of the 1960s, Andre 3000 does the reverse, debuting in England, singing over acoustic guitar and an assortment of melodic and rhythmic instruments. There are so many quotable lines from this tune, from the chorus to the Polaroid line to many more. Indeed, on it, Andre 3000 sings,

Hey! Alright now
Alright now, fellas (yeah?)
Now, what cooler than being cool? (Ice cold!)
I can’t hear you
I say what’s, what’s cooler than being cool? (Ice cold!)

“Bye Bye Bye” by NSYNC from No Strings Attached (2000)

At the turn of the 21st century, NSYNC was everywhere and this was the song that put them at the top of the boy-band pyramid. Released after they split with their longtime manger Lou Pearlman, the song was both a big hit and important for the band, as they were saying bye to Pearlman, too. Featuring Justin Timberlake, who would soon venture off on his solo career, NSYNC with their harmonies and dance moves were the cream of the crop. As a result, this song is supremely sing-along-able. And on it, the boys belt,

I’m doing this tonight
You’re probably gonna start a fight
I know this can’t be right
Hey baby come on
I loved you endlessly
When you weren’t there for me
So now it’s time to leave and make it alone

I know that I can’t take no more
It ain’t no lie
I want to see you out that door
Baby bye bye bye

“Crazy” by Gnarles Barkley from St. Elsewhere (2006)

This song from the duo Gnarles Barkley had everyone wondering if they were going a little bit mad. With beautiful singing and wonderful alliteration, lead vocalist CeeLo Green sang about the human experience in such a way that it elicited millions of others to do the same. And with the musical production from Danger Mouse, this song became an all-time classic offering. On it, Green sings with his signature falsetto,

I remember when
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you’re out there without care
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Possibly
