Today (October 9) marks what would’ve been John Lennon’s 84th birthday, and some of the people who were closest him have posted messages on their social media pages saluting the late Beatles legend.

Lennon’s former Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney shared a simple note that reads, “Happy Birthday John. Thanks for being there.”
McCartney also posted a photo of himself performing onstage with an image of Lennon playing during The Beatles’ famous 1969 rooftop concert in London projected on a video screen behind him. During the last couple of years, Paul has been playing the Fab Four song “I’ve Got a Feeling” as a virtual duet with Lennon using footage and audio from the rooftop show.
Lennon’s older son, Julian, shared his own message commemorating the birthdays of both his father and his younger brother, Sean, who was born on John’s 35th birthday in 1975.
Julian’s post featured a series of four photos that included a recent pic of him with Sean, two images of Sean as a child with their dad, and one of himself as a toddler with John from the 1960s. Julian, who is John’s only child with his first wife, Cynthia, accompanied the photos with heart, prayer hands, and kissing face emojis. Sean’s mom, of course, is Yoko Ono.
Meanwhile, the late Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s socials also acknowledged John and Sean Lennon’s birthdays. The post featured a recent photo of Sean side by side with a pic of the young John, along with the note, “9th October. Two great souls born this day. Sean & John. With love.”
Tribute Messages on The Beatles and Lennon’s Own Socials
The Beatles’ and John Lennon’s social media pages also featured birthday messages.
The Fab Four’s socials acknowledged Lennon’s birthday with a montage of paintings and drawings of John created by various fans. The Beatles also encouraged fans to share their own Lennon art by using the hashtag #HappyBirthdayJohn.
Lennon’s socials posted a photo of John holding Sean as they both blow out the candles of a birthday cake. The image is accompanied by the message, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN! HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEAN!”
Various Lennon Birthday Commemorative Events
A number of special events and releases are taking place on or near October 9 in conjunction with Lennon’s birthday.
As previously reported, the Imagine Peace Tower memorial on Videy Island near Reyjavik, Iceland, will be lit today at 8 p.m. local time/4 p.m. ET. The ceremony will be viewable live at ImaginePeaceTower.com, and at the memorial’s YouTube channel and Lennon’s X page.
A listening party of the recently released Mind Games: The Ultimate Mixes box set also will be hosted by Lennon’s X page and Spotify. The collection offers an expanded look at John’s 1973 album Mind Games.
Also, the previously reported “Meditation Mixes” of John Lennon’s classic 1973 song “Mind Games,” which were created by Sean Lennon, will be released as a triple-LP, clear-vinyl set this Friday, October 11. The “Meditation Mixes” also will be released via digital formats the same day.
Mind Games – The Meditation Mixes features nine reimagined versions of “Mind Games” that originally debuted in May 2024 exclusively via Lumenate, a consciousness-expanding psychedelic meditation phone app. Sean created the mixes in conjunction with the Mind Games: The Ultimate Mixes box set, which was released in July.
