Cat Flint, Tory Grace & Tyler Bank are American Songwriter Make Some WAVs Lyric Contest Promotion winners for their song “life of the party.” American Songwriter caught up with Cat to get the story behind the lyrics.

How long have you been songwriting?

I just started to songwrite after moving to Nashville so only about 2 full years!

Why did you enter American Songwriter’s Make Some WAVs Promotion?

I knew the song was something special and I knew that it deserved to be showcased so others who are going through grief as well know they aren’t alone.

What was the inspiration behind your song, “life of the party”?

I had a friend pass away unexpectedly last October and wanted to write something really special to honor her life as well as anyone else who’s lost someone. I reached out to Tory and Tyler because I knew they were the perfect writers to help me out with this special song and it turned out exactly how I imagined…if not better. It’s truly the perfect way to honor such a special soul’s life.

Who are your all-time favorite songwriters and why?

Kacey Musgraves is a huge inspiration for me. Her songs have spoken to me since she first became big. I love how she can change genres but never changes how honest her writing is, and that’s what I love the most.

Are you planning to release any new music this year?

I am! I have a song called ‘Call It’ coming out in the next month or so. As well as my debut EP hopefully coming out after the new year which will feature ‘life of the party.’ So stay tuned for that but you can totally go stream my music otherwise!

What would you tell other artists who are considering entering the contest?

Do it! It’s so special to be recognized for all of your hard work! Especially for a song like mine that means so much to me. I’m truly honored.
