Today is a good day to be a bluegrass fan. There’s a new live record from the Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass tribute to Tom Paxton, and a new release from Texas-based Grass Daddies. However, there’s much more to the list than that. There are plenty of new country, folk, and Americana albums and EPs to sift through as well.
Standout Albums
Today delivered plenty of great new music. As a result, selecting two standout releases today isn’t an easy task. Luckily, Caleb Caudle and the Steep Canyon Rangers dropped new records today, making things a little easier.
Caleb Caudle has experimented with a wide array of genres and sounds throughout his career. However, he sounds right at home in the Appalachian-style country music that populates his new album, Sweet Critters. More importantly, the sound fits his stellar songwriting like a glove.
Standout Tracks: “Great High Mountain” “Mountain Laurel” “The Devil’s Voice”
When it comes to modern bluegrass outfits, there aren’t many better than the Steep Canyon Rangers. At the same time, live albums always seem to catch the energy, creativity, and talent of bluegrass musicians. At the intersection of those is Live at Greenfield Lake. The 16-track collection highlights the band’s songwriting prowess, their instrumental chops, and the kind of musical chemistry that only comes from years of performing together.
Standout Tracks: “Pennies on the Tracks” “Tell the Ones I Love > Chuck in the Bush > Tell the Ones I Love” “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals”
