Million Voices Whisper features Haynes reuniting with his former Allman Brothers Band mate, slide-guitar whiz Derek Trucks, on multiple tracks. Lukas Nelson and Jamey Johnson also appear one song.
To record Million Voices Whisper, Haynes assembled a backing group of talented musicians—keyboardist John Medeski, Gov’t Mule bassist Kevin Scott, and Warren’s longtime drummer Terence Higgins, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
“It felt great to go into the studio to capture this material with this new band who are all fantastic players,” Haynes said in a statement. “This album is quite different than my previous solo records. There’s a lot of soul music influence but very song oriented with subtle nods to a few of my heroes. And what a treat to get back into the studio with my brother Derek. Big shoutout to him as well as Lukas and Jamey for being a part of it. I’m really proud of this new album.”
About the Album’s First Single, “This Life as We Know It”
Haynes has released a tune titled “This Life as We Know It” as an advance digital single from the album. A video featuring Warren and his backing band playing the melodic roots-rock ballad in a studio has debuted on his official YouTube channel.
“It has a very uplifting message and musically, as well, it is just a very positive feeling song,” Haynes says of the tune. “One that I feel we can all relate to. It’s about moving forward and getting past a lot of things but feeling good about life and feeling good about yourself.”
More About Haynes’ Collaborations on the New Album
Trucks appears on three songs on Million Voices Whisper’s standard version, as well as on one of the bonus cuts.
Derek co-wrote and play guitar on the album’s first track, “These Changes.” Another song on which Trucks is featured, is “Real, Real Love,” which Haynes began writing with the late Gregg Allman, and later finished in Allman’s style. The third track to which Derek contributed is called “Hall of Future Saints,” which closes out the album.
The bonus track featuring Trucks is a new version of “Back Where I Started.” Warren and Derek co-wrote the song, which originally appeared on the 2009 Derek Trucks Band album, Already Free.
These collaborations marked the first time Haynes and Trucks worked in the studio together since the Allman Brothers Band split.
Johnson and Nelson appear on a song called “Day of Reckoning.” The two musicians also are featured on an extended version of the tune that’s paired with a cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Find the Cost of Freedom” in a medley, which is included on the deluxe edition’s bonus disc.
In addition, Johnson co-wrote the new song “Go Down Swinging” with Haynes.
