Since his passing in February, fans and musicians have gone to great lengths to honor Toby Keith. Whether it be a cover of a song, a full-on tribute concert, or just simply having a drink in a red-solo cup, people from every facet of his fandom have made sure his legacy will live on. Paying homage to Keith will not slow down. As of recently, an announcement has come that will seemingly be one of the biggest tributes fans have seen since his death.

The announcement—The University of Oklahoma football team intends to memorialize Keith after the third quarter of their home games. Given that Keith is an Oklahoma native and a Sooner super-fan. Folks can surmise that he’s smiling at the gesture and hollering “Boomer Sooner” from his resting place. A grand gesture bound to have Sooner and Keith fans thrilled.
The Sooners’ Tribute Plans
University of Oklahoma’s executive associate athletics director Leah Beasley said, “It’s going to involve not only music, but it’s going to involve a video portion to work in with the music.” And that it they will be “rolling that out to the fans at the first game. The (third/fourth quarter break) will be dedicated to that sequence,” per The Oklahoman.
No one has yet to confirm what songs and videos are going to be played during the break. Nonetheless, the act is bound to lead to an energetic third-quarter break while remembering one of the greatest Oklahomans of all time.
Toby Keith’s Been a Sooner Forever
One of Keith’s most defining characteristics is that he was a rabid Sooner fan. Attending both football and basketball games regularly, Keith was an integral part of the OU community. Keith made such an impact in Norman that university president, Joseph Harroz, Jr., released a heartfelt statement following his death.
“As a lifelong Sooner, Toby’s passion for the crimson and cream made him a cherished figure within Sooner Nation, where he proudly shared his love for the university and its community,” was just one of the many gracious lines in the letter.
By having this celebration of life during the games, hopefully, it will make fans feel that Keith is still in the stadium.
