Mariah Carey Shares Tragic Family News, Spoke About Complicated Relationship With Mother in Recent Memoir
In Carey’s 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she included details about her complicated relationship with her mother. Carey’s parents split when she was three years old, which no doubt caused tension in her life. She wrote, “like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”
However, despite their difficult relationship, Mariah Carey mentioned her mother in the dedication of the book. “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always,” she wrote.
Additionally, Carey was allegedly estranged from her older sister, Alison. In 2021, Alison sued for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” due to some of the details Carey included in her memoir. The suit claims that Carey used the book “to humiliate and embarrass” Alison by sharing details of their lives and childhoods. According to a report from CNN, Carey never filed a response to the suit.
