‘The Voice’ Winner Who Attempted To Fake His Death Is Eyeing a Return to Music

French singer Kendji Girac, who won season three of The Voice: la plus belle voix, has spoken out after a shooting that at first seemed accidental, but has since been revealed as self-inflicted. Girac was shot in the chest at a Traveler’s community in Biscarrosse, a small town on the coast of south-west France. Almost four months later, he has broken his silence, claiming he wants to make a return to music.

In a video posted on Instagram, Kendji Girac addressed his fans and made a sincere apology. “I really regret everything that happened,” he said, per a report from French outlet Public. “Since my message of May 10, I have not given you any news because I had to take care of myself and think about what happened to understand how I got to this point. And above all, make the right decisions for the future,” he continued.

Girac then addressed the incident. “As you know, I almost lost my life, the love of my family, my audience, my friends. My daughter almost lost her father. I don’t know what happened,” he said. He also shared that he was going to “learn from [his] mistakes,” because “nothing is fixed in life.”

Kendji Girac concluded by asking for forgiveness. “I want to ask for forgiveness, to apologize to those I have hurt, to those I have caused pain, I never wanted that. My goal is to make people happy … God gave me this second chance, it’s not for nothing.” He added, “It’s up to me now to show you who I am, to regain your trust. Actions are needed and I will do everything to live up to them now. I look forward to seeing you again, very soon.”

Initially, when the shooting was reported, Girac and witnesses claimed it was an accident, that he was cleaning a Colt .45 that he bought at a pawn shop. On April 25, a few days after the shooting, the story changed, and the real reason was revealed.

According to a report from Le Monde, Kendji Girac wanted to fake his death to scare his girlfriend into staying with him. Regional prosecutor Olivier Janson said during a press conference, “[Girac] was very frightened when he heard her talking about leaving, he panicked and wanted to scare her … In a way, he simulated suicide,” adding, “He said he took responsibility for what he did while regretting it very much.”
