When Katy Perry announced her exit from American Idol, the producers of the show had the massive task of finding the right performer to take her spot. Since season 22 ended, fans and even Perry offered some suggestions as to who might take her spot. With names like Jon Bon Jovi and Jelly Roll thrown around, it appears that nobody had the slightest clue given that the newest judge to join American Idol will be former winner Carrie Underwood. Excited to continue her American Idol career, the singer recalled how her career in the spotlight started.

With Underwood expected to join Lionel Riche and Luke Bryan on season 23 of American Idol, fans are already excited about the upcoming seasons and watching the alum return. Sharing a video on social media, Good Morning America showcased the singer’s rise to fame, which included Underwood recalling how it all started. “I remember being at home in our little house and seeing on TV that there were auditions in St. Louis. My mom said, ‘If you want to go, I’ll drive you.’ “
Offering nothing more than to drive her to the audition, neither Underwood nor her mother had any idea what that moment would bring. “I went from nobody knowing my name to tens of millions of people watching the show.” Holding numerous awards throughout her time in the music industry, Underwood insisted, “I’m proud of everything that I was able to accomplish on the show, and I’m so proud of everything that I’ve accomplished since.”

While excited to return to American Idol, so are the fans as they shared comments like, “Ahhh, this is SO exciting. I voted every single week 20 years ago and am still a fan today. PERFECT CHOICE for the next judge. You’ll amazing, Carrie. Can’t wait to watch Idol again.” Another person added, “I will definitely be tuning in now! Carrie’s season on Idol was the first season I really started watching American Idol. Congratulations! Best decision!”
More than a fan, Craig Erwich, the president of Disney Television Group, also shared his excitement. “This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America’s hearts on Idol and launched her successful multi-Grammy Award-winning career, As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows of television.” He continued, “This is a full-circle moment both for the show and for audiences at home who have been tuning in for over two decades. Welcome home Carrie.”
