The Story Behind Lady Gaga’s Stunning Version of “La Vie En Rose”

In 2018, Lady Gaga starred alongside Bradley Cooper in a reimagining of A Star is Born. Gaga played a green pop artist opposite Cooper’s weathered rock star. It was one of the Chromatica singer’s first big roles. Cooper–also the film’s director–knew Gaga was up to the task after catching her performance of “La Vie en Rose” at a benefit in Los Angeles.

“She leveled the entire room when she came out,” Cooper once said. “It was insane. And I thought, right then, that song is in the movie.”

Cooper followed through with that idea. Gaga did indeed perform a rendition of “La Vie en Rose” in the film. Gaga’s character, Ally, belts out the number when she meets Cooper’s Jackson for the first time. True to life, the moment makes quite the impression on the rocker. So much so that he asks her to join him on stage soon after.

Gaga’s version of this French classic proves just how versatile she is as an artist. She can do high concept pop and classic, easy-listening. She can wow listeners with her unique (often strange) sense of artistry, but she can also belt it out with the best of them.

Gaga has performed Piaf’s song several times. She plans to do so again at the 2024 Olympics. While we wait to see what she drums up with Dion, check out her performance of the song from A Star is Born, below.
