Shortly after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, July 21, Cher, Katy Perry, Barbra Streisand, and John Legend, among other artists used social media to thank the president for his service and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the 47th president.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” said Biden in an informal letter posted on his official social media pages on July 21. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Actress and singer Bette Midler called Biden a “true American patriot” on X. She noted “He is the rarest of politicians,” adding, “a decent man who lived by his values.”

In an Instagram post, John Legend praised Biden’s policies and leadership. Further, Legend endorsed Harris as the next president. “Joe Biden has presided over the most consequential first term of real progress in my lifetime,” wrote Legend. “He helped us have the most robust recovery from [2020] of any nation in the world, invested in our infrastructure, and made by far the largest investment in fighting climate change our nation has ever seen.”

Legend added that Biden “more than earned a re-election” but acknowledged that “time and age come for all of us.” He added, “I’m grateful for the grace and patriotism he has shown by choosing to step aside for the sake of the country. I’m so ready to work to help unite the pro-democracy coalition to reject Trump’s authoritarian, oppressive Project 2025 and elect Kamala Harris as our President.”

Cher added that she supported Biden but believed it was unlikely that he would win the presidency again against former President Donald J. Trump.

“In my heart, I’m tortured, because I don’t believe the Democrats can win the presidency with ‘Pres Biden’ ‘Joe’ whom I’ve loved since we met in 2008,” wrote Cher in another post. “I campaigned for him I believe it’s time to pass the baton, time for [Democrats] to think ‘way’ outside the box. Maybe even a split ticket.”
