“Still to This Day I Hate That Song”: The KISS Classic That Gene Simmons Dreads Just Hit Another Milestone

Although gaining the nickname “The Demon”, Gene Simmons watched as his stardom hit legendary heights for his time with the iconic band KISS. While helping form the band alongside Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley, the band went on to sell millions of records and hold countless awards. Simmons even gained entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thanks to his time with the band. But it all ended in 2023 when the band decided to retire. While KISS looks to the future with digital avatars, the band recently crossed a milestone on Spotify for the hit song “I Was Made For Lovin’ You.” Although thrilled, Simmons explained how he isn’t a big fan of the song.

First launched back in 2020, Spotify’s Billions Club is an exclusive playset created for the main reason of celebrating songs that crossed one billion streams on the platform. So far, the playlist includes songs like “Last Resort”, “Bring Me To Life”, “You Give Love A Bad Name”, and even “Dream On.” Expanding that list, fans excitedly watched as “I Was Made For Lovin’ You” was added. With only 500 songs making up the list, the addition of KISS is a cause for celebration. And while thrilled about the milestone, Simmons discussed how it wasn’t his favorite song.

Originally released on the 1979 album Dynasty, Simmons had more than enough time to fall in love with the song, but in 2018, the singer opened up about the song and how he didn’t like it.

Gene Simmons Explains His Disdain For “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”

While walking through the process of creating the song, Simmons explained to OK! Magazine, “ “Well, Paul Stanley comes in and he says, ‘Did you write any songs?’ I go, ‘Oh, yeah. I’ve got one called ‘Almost Human’.’ ‘Yeah? How does it go?’ ‘I’m almost human. I can’t help feelin’ strange.’ ‘Yeah, that’s cool. That’s a Gene song.’ ‘How about you, Paul?’ He goes, ‘I’ve got one. [It goes] ‘Tonight.” “Ooooh. That’s cool. What’s the next line?’ ‘I’m gonna give it all to you.’ ‘Oh, yeah. I know what ‘it’ means — I know exactly what you mean.’ ‘In the darkness.’ [Claps] ‘Love that!’ ‘There something I wanna do.’ ‘Yeah, I know what that ‘something’ is. Wow! That’s a cool song.”

When learning his part was pretty simple, Simmons said he told the band, “’You’re killing me. Really? I’m gonna sing like my grandmother?’ [Sings] ‘Do, do, do…’ I hate playing that song to [this] day. Stadiums full of people jump up and down like biblical locusts — they go nuts — with tattoos and grills on… ‘Ahhhh!’ They’re all jumping up and down, and I’m going, ‘Do, do, do, do, do, do… Kill me now.’ Still — still to this day I hate that song.”
