Morgan Evans is putting his spin on John Denver‘s classic, “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.” On Friday (October 6), Evans is releasing his new song “Thank God She’s a Country Girl” which he wrote with Jesse Frasure and is produced by Chris DeStefano. “Country Boy” songwriter John Sommers also gets a writing credit on Morgans’ track that features such lyrics, She’s a four-leaf clover / Always good luck / Queen of the bench seat in my truck / She pulls me out if I ever get stuck / Thank god she’s a country girl.

“Making this song has just been pure fun from start to finish,” Evans says in a press release about the song. “It was an absolute pleasure to rework such a classic song and, with the approval of John Martin Sommers, the writer of ‘Thank God I’m A Country Boy,’ I’m stoked to put this one out into the world! I hope it puts a smile on your face and gets your feet moving wherever in the world you are!”

Cole Swindell followed a similar model when he reworked Jo Dee Messina‘s “Heads Carolina, Tails California” to make his hit 2022 single “She Had Me at Heads Carolina.” The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and reached No. 16 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. It won Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2023 ACM Awards.

“Country Girl” follows the success of “Over for You,” the first single Evans released following his divorce from Kelsea Ballerini in 2022. “It came from a pretty dark time as you can probably tell,” he tells American Songwriter. “I went through a divorce last year and while that was going down, there was a three-month period where I didn’t really write any music. The first time I sat down to write music after that was the session that ‘Over For You’ came out of.”

Evans is currently embarking on the U.S. leg of his Life Upside Down Tour, which kicks off October 5 in Louisville, Kentucky, and continues through December 16 where it wraps in Madison, Wisconsin.
