For weeks, the band has been cryptically teasing new music, sending subliminal messages through newspaper ads, postcards, and … seashells? But now, the band has finally shared something concrete, a snippet of a song along with its actual release date.
On Wednesday (Jan. 11), the pop-punk rockers of 2000s fame confirmed they will make their return in the coming week with new music in tow. In a post on social media, they shared a snippet of a new song, titled “Love From the Other Side,” heralding its arrival on January 18. They also wrote in the caption, “Lots more to come soon.”
Showcasing the band’s trademark vocals and guitar arrangements, get a taste of their new song below.
The band first began teasing new music when blacked-out ads, reading “FOB 8” and “If you build it, they will come,” began appearing in the Chicago Tribune. The speculation of a forthcoming album – what would be Fall Out Boy’s first in nearly five years – was further fueled when Fall Out Boy fans began receiving postcards all containing the same message.
The postcards read, “I saw you in a bright clear field. Hurricane heat in my head. The kind of pain you feel to get good in the end. Inscribed like stone and faded by the rain: ‘Give up what you love give up what you love before it does you in…’”
Another teaser arrived in the form of a mind-boggling claymation video that left more questions than answers, but ended with a snippet of what is presumably a tune from their coming album.
A recent end-of-year newsletter to fans also hinted at the band’s long-teased comeback in a lengthy, nonsensical letter. “We spent the last year jamming ideas in a tiny room [and] can’t wait to share them with you,” read the letter in closing. “Thanks for always sticking around. Thanks for working the beat. Spoiler alert: we got more than a gold watch coming for you next year.”
