Best known for his Grammy nominated hit “Lullaby” which contained his classic line about Hell-A being “…Nashville with a tan…” but the fact is, Mullins has been cranking out endearing and engaging folk rock for years. This new collection-his twelfth album-is more poignant, tight tunes about people experiencing too much drama in desperate little towns you’re glad you’re not stuck in, “Cabbagetown,” maybe? Georgia-born Mullins has that gravelly voice-think a serious John Prine-as the world lives up to (or down to Dodger announcer Vin Scully’s astute observation: “Reality is a far cry from a marvelous story.”). For example, “All in My Head” explores the notion that everybody dies-that’s life; “Song of the Self” offers sound love advice should that elusive emotion ever make itself known, just don’t bet on it. There’s even the obligatory train song with some nice guitar work by Peter Stroud.
