Atlanta-based indie outfit Of Montreal have created quite a buzz surrounding their forthcoming LP Skeletal Lamping. Already leaked online and originally set to be released in stores October 7, the band announced last week that the album’s release will be pushed back to October 21.
But wait-in return for those two excruciating extra weeks you’ll have to go without hearing Kevin Barnes/Georgie Fruit (assuming you haven’t already heard the album online), the band has some included some pretty sweet goodies for those who purchase a physical copy of Skeletal Lamping.
In addition to what is (in my opinion) some of Montreal’s finest work to date, those who purchase SL will receive such band-designed objects as t-shirts, tote bags, wall decals, patches, and buttons. The Skeletal Lamping vinyl will also include its own unique artwork, complete with a few equestrian-themed surprises.
Barnes told PitchforkMedia of the band’s intentions, saying, “We hope this idea catches on and, in the future, square CD packaging will be abandoned forever and only interesting art objects will fill record stores. We envision a time when you’ll be walking around your local record shop and be like, ‘What’s the new Radiohead album again? Oh yeah, a bonsai tree in the shape of a deformed goat, I see it over there.’”
Still feeling greedy? Barnes, Fruit, and company will be embarking on two-month North American tour, kicking off in Durham, NC on October 7.
Check tour dates and read Barnes’ more detailed explanation of Skeletal Lamping‘s packaging (“We Will Only Propagate Exceptional Objects”) here.
