Chris Weitz, director of Twilight sequel New Moon, announced at San Diego’s Comic-Con that two indie rock favorites would be contributing original tunes to the latest installment of the wildly popular tween vampire movies that are more hormones than horror.

“Well, fortunately I’m not at the stage where I have to turn anybody down yet,” the director said at Comic-Con, “because everything is still kind of up in the air, but I am surprised by some of the bands that have said they are interested.”

So who are the two musicians Weitz recruited? Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and the man behind Bon Iver, Justin Vernon. According to Weitz, both are contributing new, never-before-released songs.

While critics seem to have mixed messages about Yorke and Vernon participating in the film, Weitz is excited to have them on board.

“I selfishly want to put songs in by artists I love and some the cast and crew also happen to love,” Weitz said at Comic-Con. “I think [Bon Iver] is fantastic. He says he wrote it for the film, but who ever knows if it might just be something laying around in his cupboard.”

Weitz is also hoping to line up Kings of Leon for the soundtrack.

The soundtrack to the first Twilight film featured music from Muse and Paramore, along with a couple of tunes by Mr. Robert Pattinson (who plays leading man/vampire Edward Cullen) himself. Pattinson declined to contribute to New Moon’s soundtrack, telling OK! magazine “Music is [his] back up plan.” Right.

Questionable combination of artists/movie aside, look at the bright side. If you get dragged along to see it, at least you’ll be listening to good music. That is, if you can drown out the 12-year-old girls screaming uncontrollably for R-Patz.
