Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, better known to Beastie fans as MCA, had the sad task of delivering some somber news yesterday, announcing that he has a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland.

Fans need not rush to expect the worst, as Yauch states in a YouTube video that “luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable.” He also reassures fans that the tumor will not affect Yauch’s vocals; however, the tumor will require “several additional weeks of treatment.” This being the case, the Beastie Boys are pushing back the release of their new album Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 1, and are canceling all immediate tour dates, including stops at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and All Points West.

For almost 30 years as a member of the Beastie Boys, Yauch has delighted fans and critics alike with his witty lyricism and unique approach to hip-hop. His involvement with the group has helped to diversify and expand the genre. Yauch seems to have retained his spirit and sense of humor, as on the video announcement he playfully mocks friend and fellow Beastie Adam Horowitz for his beard and what Yauch calls a “Kenny Rogers” look.

Music fans are hoping and praying for the successful recovery of one of hip-Hop’s true innovators.
