In Photos: FYF Fest 2017

Leading up to the 14th edition of FYF Fest, held July 21-23 on the grounds of Exposition Park surrounding the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, many folks inaccurately claimed that this would be the first time the fest would expand to three days. The initial instance was actually in 2006, when it was ostensibly a DIY event, featuring punk rock notables like the Circle Jerks, the Bronx and Black Flag, plus a few local up-and-comers like Giant Drag and Silversun Pickups. So, more monumental than the reversion back to three days this year was the shift in caliber and diversity of acts booked: Björk and Missy Elliott anchored Friday, Frank Ocean and a Tribe Called Quest topped Saturday, and Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop and Solange filled out Sunday’s top-tier fare. Overall, there were probably fewer traditional punk, more hip-hop and certainly more female-fronted acts than ever before (in fact, this was possibly one of the most femme-centric major music fests ever staged). The get-factor of the headliners alone – Missy Elliott’s first Stateside show in nearly a decade, plus Frank Ocean and Nine Inch Nails’ first U.S. fest appearances in three years – made a solid case for best lineup of the year. Then add the undercard, which combatted the rash of lineup homogenization by packing in plenty of cult favorites alongside rising stars and behold, you’ve got an event that caters to the tastes of virtually any diehard live music fan.
