With their announcement of two upcoming releases, Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers has given fans something to look forward to this summer. A CD/DVD of the Truckers’ Austin City Limits performance, entitled Live from Austin, TX, will be released July 7, and The Fine Print (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008) will follow on September 1.

Drive-By Truckers performed September 26, 2008 for the PBS television show. The discs feature 13 songs, including five from last year’s album Brighter Than Creation’s Dark. Band founder Patterson Hood told Paste magazine that the show is something he’s “really thrilled about, really proud of.”

The Fine Print is primarily a compilation of previously unfinished songs begun earlier in the band’s career. Seven of the songs were written around the time of 2004’s The Dirty South, which Hood describes as “an especially fertile period for the band.” The album also contains covers of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” and Tom Petty’s “Rebels.”

These releases will cap off a busy summer for the Truckers. In April, soul singer Booker T. released Potato Hole, which featured DBT as the backup band; the band has been touring with Booker T., promoting the album. Additionally, on June 23, Patterson Hood released his second solo album, and has been on tour with the Screwtopians. CNN Live quoted Current.com’s Peter Grumbine as saying that Hood’s album, Murdering Oscar (and Other Loves Songs), was his “hands down…favorite album of the year,” to which he added, “unless he releases another one later this year.”

Drive-By Truckers will reenter the studio this summer to begin recording an album to be released in 2010.
