This summer, singer-songwriter and lay professor Steve Earle will return to the lectern, so to speak, when he hosts the 2nd annual “Camp Copperhead.” The camp will be held over four days and four nights (July 20-24) at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York, an idyllic retreat in the Catskill Mountains situated just a half-hour west of Woodstock.
Earle, who previously taught songwriting at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, says the camp will emphasize the teaching of the “craft,” first and foremost.“The inspiration is the easy part, and maybe the chorus and maybe the first verse,” he says in the promotional video below. “But most of the camp is about writing the second and third verses, which is work.”
The camp will also feature open-mic nights and poetry workshops, as well as discussion about the “inspirational” aspect of writing, and how the consumption of other art forms can feed into one’s own output as a songwriter.
