In a letter published on Seattle blog The Stranger earlier today, guitarist Chris Walla announced he was leaving Death Cab for Cutie. After nearly twenty years with the indie pop quartet, Walla explained his decision as follows:
“Deciding to leave the band was not, and is not, easy,” he wrote. “It’s really, really sad. I love my bandmates, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and mercifully, those things don’t change with my departure. Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible. Darkness may find me, but I shall never choose it.”
The rest of the band posted messages of support for Walla, expressing via Facebook, “We will miss Chris and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career. We are excited about sharing new music, and seeing all of you very soon.”
Death Cab fans can expect one more studio album featuring Walla’s guitar work, which the band has already recorded with new producer Rich Costey. There are currently no release details for the as-yet-untitled album. Walla will continue touring with the band until September 13, closing out his tenure at the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC.
