For those of you who love country music and enjoy lists, here’s a tantalizing bit of news.

According to a story on Billboard.com, Rosanne Cash’s upcoming album, her first since 2006’s Black Cadillac, is called The List, and it features songs her father, Johnny Cash, singled out for her when she was a teenager.

The List is based on a list my father made for me when I was 18 years old,” Cash tells Billboard.  “He called it the ‘100 Essential Country Songs’ and said if I learned this list, I would be truly educated.  We are culling about 15 songs from the list, and re-interpreting them, with the respect of an archivist,  the love of a daughter, and my own sensibility as a New Yorker for the last two decades. ….It’s basically me getting a chance to be an interpreter instead of a songwriter for a change, which is really liberating, really fun.”

We need to track Cash down and get a hold of this list. Hopefully she’ll include it in the liner notes. So far, the only confirmed track on the album, which is largely finished, is “Long Black Veil.”  Cash promises the album will include some guest stars as well. We can’t wait.
