Caroline Spence, winner of the 2013 American Songwriter Lyric Contest Grand Prize, chose to demo “What You Don’t Know,” one of her “catchier songs,” at a Music Row studio.

“I wrote this song a really long time ago,” said the Charlottesville, Virginia native, who moved to Nashville three years ago to pursue a songwriting career. “I wrote it in high school and I found these lyrics, and I remembered the melody which is sort of shocking.”

Spence’s demo session at Omni Sound Studios was part of her prize package, which also included a co-write with Grammy-nominated recording artist Lee Brice. Spence said that she had never written with a “pop-country” performer before. The two worked on a song called “Sitting Pretty.”

Watch the video of the co-write and demo session below. Got lyrics? The next Lyric Contest, with Ashley Monroe as the dream co-write, starts February 3rd.
